The final year has begun!
Back to routine and back to deadlines. We were briefed on Friday for the first 1week project.
'Promote Visual Communication to potential AUCB students.' The idea is that I focus on my specialist area.
This is a tough project for anyone that is still indecisive about their area! We were advided to narrow it down as much as possible by not just saying, Graphic Design or even Publishing.
I've always been drawn to the layout of pages - the structure and organization of the elements on a blank canvas.
Also, I feel that if you've got a good grasp of layouts, this is something that can be applied in throughout Visual Communication. Not only in Publishing.
When asked what I liked by a tutor, it didn't take long before I delivered the word 'layouts'. So this shall be the theme of my poster.

This morning I had a little bit of fun playing with fabric...whilst sipping on a cup of tea!

Summer updates!
The summer is quickly coming to an end so I think it's time to reflect on what I've accomplished!
Placement:
As I mentioned in a previous post, I recently did a six week placement at Strange which was a very good experience. It gave me a good grasp of how things work in the industry and what to expect in a near future!
Inspirational trip:
In June I had the opportunity to go to Venice, which needless to say, was very inspirational.
I went in the name of a 'drawing trip' but I ended up spending my time soaking in the culture and beautiful surroundings...or in other words, inspiring myself. Tones of photos were taken too for future and artistic reference!
Before I left, I set myself a packaging design brief which I am currently working on. The idea was to capture visuals that reflect Venice and portray that in my work.
Freelance work:
Another objective of mine was to work on one or two projects to build on my portfolio.
In September I will be designing some jar labels for the Brewery Tap in Ipswich. Further updates on this project will be posted soon.
Next steps:
I am currently looking for another placement. This may not be until the Christmas break as I go back to University in October.
The design job I previously mentioned will keep be busy in September. I also want to finish my Venetian packaging designs.
And finally...! I obviously want to enjoy the sunshine before embarking on my final year at University so that is also a must in my diary at the moment. On the 29th of August I will be going to the Winslow Show which is a fun filled and inspirational event. Photos to follow!

Placement
So the second year is over and the summer is finally here! One of my aims for the holidays was to find a placement which I managed to get a couple of weeks ago. I am very glad to be doing a six week placement at Strange in Bournemouth. I will be posting more details about the work I am doing there further into the placement.

Drawing Trip
I have just come back from a few days in Venice. It was supposed to be a drawing trip but I ended up spending my time taking photos and just soaking in the Venetian lifestyle which I found very inspiring!

Ella Riley's
A photo I found in an online article about Ella Riley's sweetshop. In the background is some of the work I designed for them. (Labels on jars)

Portfolio Guidance
Today I had the opportunity of having Jane Richardson from Aquent look at my portfolio. I was able to show her my portfolio, website and CV and was able to receive some constructive and useful feedback from her.
It was very helpful and I'm glad I went to this session.

NHS Reply
I wrote to NHS a couple of weeks ago to ask a few questions that would strenghten my research. Today I received the reply.
My email was slightly misunderstood as I mentioned I would be targetting a younger audience. I didn't specify an age group so it was assumed that I was aiming it at 14-16 year olds however my campaign is going to be aimed at 18-30s.
I was sent a link to one of the NHS websites, Give and let live, which is targetted at school age children. I hadn't come across this one yet so it was interesting to see that they have used design and a bit of fun to make the subject less off puting.
She also said that from their experience they know that direct mail is an effective marketing channel.

Survey
As a way of getting to know my audience better I have created an online survey. I wanted to understand more about the group I am targetting and how they feel about organ donation.
From my survey results so far, most people agree with it but more than half of the people don't get round to registering as a donor.

Talking about Package Design
Today I went to Westbourne to meet Nick Baines, a manager of a Deli who has previously worked as a Food writer. He is also very into food packaging so it was interesting to hear his opinions about the subject. We spoke for a while about package design and discussed trends and the way of it attratcs the audience.
As I want to write my essay on consumer behaviour, and how package design affects people's shopping experiences, I found this conversation very helpful. He showed us a lot of different products that the shop are stocking and explained how some are very popular just because of the packaging.
